Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin
5.0
This story was heart breaking but beautifully written. Deception and being in denial just hurts everyone around you. Fear of being true to yourself and who you are is so destructive. David was committed to keeping up a façade that ultimately had the opposite effect of what he wanted. He wanted to blend in, he wanted to be seen as “normal” and to have a wife and kids to go home to. He loved and resented Giovanni because it was a constant reminder of what he hated about himself.
One of my favorite tagged spots in this book: He pulled me against him, putting himself into my arms as though he were giving me himself to carry, and slowly pulled me down with him to that bed. With everything in me screaming “No!” yet the sum of me sighed “yes”
