This book broke my heart a little and not in a good way. I had such high expectations for it after the masterpiece that was Gideon the Ninth and they were just dashed to shreds. It wasn’t horrible and I didn’t hate it but it just wasn’t up to the very high standards set by the first book. For over half the book I felt totally confused by what was going and was trying desperately to follow with no success. And then one piece of info came that made it make sense but it left me feeling like I wasted so much time being confused that I couldn’t even appreciate the reveal. There was one saving grace in the final quarter of the book that made me glad I pushed through and made it all worth it but it took SO long to come and was so very short. I do still think Muir has created such a spectacular world with these books but this second one definitely paled in comparison to the first. Fingers crossed that the third is a bombshell that redeems it all!
