The Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White

5.0

This book is set after the more traditional story of Merlin and King Arthur, with Merlin's daughter (Guinevere) becoming Arthur's wife as an attempt to help keep him safe since Merlin's banishment. It's a story of forbidden magic, lost memories, and betrayal... and I loved it!

I was a bit worried going in that I would've found it predictable and a bit slow, due to already knowing the general plot of King Arthur's tale. However, since it happens after that, and is less of a retelling and more of a gender bending story INSPIRED by the traditional lore, I found it refreshing and fun to read. I thought the world building was done beautifully and I especially liked reading about the friendship between Guinevere and her maid.

It's really hard to pin point what made me like this book so much... Perhaps it was that I hadn't read many good books last month so my standards had dropped? Or that I just enjoyed a mild fantasy novel? I've read a few reviews saying that some of the characters were a bit 2D... and whilst a don't disagree, I weirdly found myself enjoying this anyway.
