Fairy Tale by Stephen King

4.0

“A story as old as myth, and as startling and iconic as the rest of King’s work, Fairy Tale is about an ordinary guy forced into the hero’s role by circumstance, and it is both spectacularly suspenseful and satisfying.”

“Fairy Tale” was a refreshing and much needed return to the classic Stephen King from the good old days of The Dark Tower.

All of the elements of a good story are provided. The unwitting hero, Charlie Reade is a good kid, not perfect, but he’s been through a lot in his seventeen years. Then there’s the reclusive and mysterious old man and his dog, Mr. Bowditch & Radar. Naturally, because KA, Charlie is slowly drawn into Mr. Bowditch’s world where he discovers the secret he has kept for so many years.

“Go then, there are other worlds than these.”

At this point, King fans should know that there is a portal to another world involved. This world is held under an evil spell (of course) and only one person can help the people who live there retake their former kingdom. Take a guess on who.

King has done what he does best and that’s create a vast imaginary world woven together with bits of Grimm’s Fairy Tales and a hint of The Wizard of Oz. If you haven’t yet read King’s Dark Tower series, “Fairy Tale” may be a perfect starter book for you as it illustrates the wonderful imagination of a master story teller.
