Jemisin wastes no time in immersing you into the world of the fifth season. I felt a little lost at first, as she doesn’t waste time spelling out this new world, but it didn’t take very long to understand the dialect and politics. The structure works well to sustain mystery while simultaneously building familiarity through her compelling characters, centered around a group of feared people that have the power to manipulate the seismic activity of the earth.

I don’t have much experience with fantasy so I don’t have much for comparison but I did really enjoy “The Fifth Season” and plan to finish the trilogy.
