The Devil in a Forest by Gene Wolfe
4.0
Wonderfully paced and written small-scale medieval story that is much less fantastical than its reputation would suggest. Captures the era well without getting too lurid, and leaves enough up to interpretation to bring out the imagination of the reader. The Devil in a Forest plays with anti-climaxes in an interesting way, that it's not building up to something large or even terribly eventful in the grand scheme of things, which grounds the story in not only a tangible sort of realism, but in a scale that doesn't get overwhelming.
The characters may not be as intriguing to pick apart as the ones in Wolfe's Book of the New Sun cycle, but it flew by and is ultimately a satisfying read.
