What an amazing read! It has such stunning prose while simultaneously depicting the harsh realities of the Biafra war (between the Igbo and the Hausa which preceded the UK’s decolonization of Nigeria) and what it was like for a little girl to grow up in a religious society that criminalizes queerness. When Ijeoma’s mother discovers her queerness, she can’t accept it and uses her religion to convince her that it’s an abomination and to change her. Few things trigger me, which I’m grateful for, but those are the parts that got me. It also explores societal expectations placed on women and xenophobia.
