This book is definitely best read with its companion book because a lot of references from the first book are fresh and just short glimpses. You always feel like you missed something important. I even read the first book years ago before I learned of this book and thought it would be okay... it was not. As a stand alone story I do like how it focuses on after the war and life for those who fought in all sides.
