I'm going to start this with the disclaimer that I don't know if my review is entirely the book's fault or if possibly I just wasn't in the right headspace for it. I do feel like one needs to be mentally prepared for a 700-page family saga which revolves mainly around logging before one dives headfirst into it, which I was not.
This book was a lot while also being not very much at all. Though it did definitely have its moments. Certain subplots were more interesting than others, and there were a handful of relationships that I particularly enjoyed. However, there was also quite a bit during which I was bored. The writing wasn't *bad*, but it all felt a bit detached to me, so it was difficult for me to be invested, on top of not caring much about the subject matter in the first place. It just felt like every part of the book was "the thing that happened next." The author lacked heart. For there being so many heavy and important issues that were touched on, I somehow just found myself not really caring.
