28 Days Later, Vol. 1: London Calling by Declan Shalvey, Michael Alan Nelson

3.5

I'm rereading this series because I remember really enjoying it the first time around, when I read it monthly as it came out fully fifteen years ago (!). So far, it's holding up. I enjoy the scratchy, red-soaked art, and the story is really enjoyable so far. It doesn't perhaps have the absolute grit and darkness of the original film, but that's not a problem for me - I'm happy with a slightly lighter 28 Days story. I thought when I first read it that some of the plot elements were a little convenient, and I think the same now - most notably, there is no good reason given for Selena changing her mind about returning to Britain. It's glossed over almost as though the writer is aware that it's not a decision her character would make, and he was keen to just get past it as soon as possible.

It's action-heavy, mostly plot and not so much deep character work, but it holds up, and I enjoyed it on a reread.
