Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson

This is one of my favorite books. Books often portray mental illnesses and eating disorders as cute and desirable. This book shows eating disorders in a realistic lens; it shows how dangerous they can be. This book does not romanticize eating disorders like other books with eating disorder subplots do. The plot does not totally center around Lia's eating disorder, either. There is also the problem of Cassie's death and Lia dealing with that, but her eating disorder is a big part of it, just like it is in people's lives when they suffer from an eating disorder. This book shows what it's like to live with anorexia, and I think it's good to have a book out there that explores that dark part of eating disorders.
