The Last Girl: My Story of Captivity, and My Fight Against the Islamic State by Nadia Murad

5.0

4.7/5 stars.
Nadia was like you or me, she may lived in Iraq but she had a "normal" life, a loving family, friends to hang with, hobbies she enjoyed, a school she liked and dreams for the future. Suddenly her life as she knew it ended, she was a victim of the Islamic State. Her village was destroyed, the man were massacred, the boys were kidnapped for covert and the girls were taken for being used as sex slaves, Nadia was captured alongside her sisters, she lost six brothers and her mother. She was held captive and sold repeatedly by militants, she became a survivor after a lot of suffering. She’s now a refugee and tells her story to raise the voice against ISIS, remembering the love for her now almost nonexistent Yazidi community and asking for justice. She won the Nobel Peace Prize last year and she’s demanding to protect women, children and minorities from persecution, in particular victims of sexual violence because this is still happening and we’re not doing much about it.

It’s so hard to believe this happened just 5 years ago and still happening in a lot of places in the world, the words written by Nadia hit me like no other memoir before. Not only the story is incredible and painful but is touching and immersive. I can see how brave she is and is so inspiring to get to read her story. Can’t recommend this enough.
