Life Moves Pretty Fast: The Lessons We Learned From Eighties Movies by Hadley Freeman

5.0

I picked this up on a whim and wasn't sure whether it would annoy me or not but it actually ended up being one of my favourite things I've read this year. I love writing that's passionate and more so when it's erudite as well, especially when it manages to avoid pretension in the process and this manages it perfectly. It's very sharp and perceptive, easy to read and fun, and succeeds in its task of not only making you want to rewatch old favourites, but putting forward a strong case for ones you'd never even considered watching until now. It also sheds light on why modern films feel so different to 80s ones and has plenty of fascinating facts and trivia. It's not often I genuinely can't put a book down but this was one of them, and I enjoyed it enough that it kicked me back into a reading frenzy. It may have just been the right book at the right time, but it's highly recommended nonetheless, particularly if you're a film fan, 80s or otherwise.
