The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

5.0

This book is so much fun! It's playful, sarcastic, and witty in turns — the tone fluctuates between insouciant irreverence and the awe that the universe and its sheer size inspires in most people: exactly how I imagine the eponymous volume it describes. The characters are all distinct and memorable, and the plot is so entertaining. Adams also strikes that balance between descriptive worldbuilding and respecting the reader's own comprehension and imagination in fairly straightforward prose highlighted with colorful and unique figurative language. The whole book felt like a "just the beginning" installment of an epic adventure, and it's definitely an effective hook for the rest of the series.
