Each of these books got better and better, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about the Kaul family legacy since I read it. Instead of taking place over a couple of months or years, this last book spans over a decade, but carefully attends to what's changed over that time. In particular, the underlying theme of what needs to be kept to maintain one's culture and what's worth leaving behind without forgetting oneself resonated deeply, as we saw the Kauls struggling with this at home and with diasporic groups fighting assimilation abroad.
