The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah
5.0
This book.....
This book was slow to get into. I thought, oh just another family trip type of book because I never read the preview to see what it is about. I was wrong.
We meet the main character, Leni, with her mother and father. We see struggle and challenges in the first section. And then we see them move to Alaska. And then that's when the book gets interesting. The first part gives you a little bit of background unless you know kind of what life has been like.
But then you get to the second part and the second part is about their Alaska and life for them up there is anything but normal. And there are moments of happiness, and sadness, horror oh, and longing. And then towards the end of the second section there are sections that just make you catch your breath and stop what you're doing. And when you get to the last section of the book there is no way to describe the emotional rollercoaster that occurs when you're reading it.
You get to see Leni and her Mom struggle against the abuse of her father. You see her father go crazy and then become normal, and you see him turning against people you see Lenny's life changes when she meets a boy. You see their love grow and then all of a sudden you just see the devastation and turmoil. And then you see their love for reunited and it's pretty substantial. You see death, you see crime, you see people who have their friends backs in the most noble ways possible. You see the true "great alone".
I have read amazing books lately and I'm proud to add this to my top 3 list, possibly bumping my #2 out of the way. I cried in this book. I lived in this book. I felt the characters plight, struggle, terror, and finally happiness. This is not a good book. This is an extraordinary novel.
