Beautiful writing and a unique point of view for the gold rush setting. I especially enjoyed how layered the characters’ identities were revealed to be, over time. I think  many people living in the Western U.S. today could relate to those complex identities of belonging and not belonging to a place and a people. I also found the writing poetic and quietly intense, mirroring the natural landscape it’s describing.
