Womb City by Tlotlo Tsamaase

3.0

Part science fiction, part supernatural horror. The incident described in the book's blurb happens quite far in, and the second half is stronger. I thought it would be more about the artifical wombs for some reason, but really they're just there as motivation for Nelah. She really wants a baby and she makes a lot of bad choices because of that.

Everyone was pretty horrible though, I didn't want Nelah and Jan to get away with it. Yeah, she's a victim of domestic abuse and a controlling, misogynistic society, but what they did was just awful and there are no excuses. Plus she was so self-centred. These days I want to like the characters in the books I read, even when they do bad things.

If you like your science fiction sciency, maybe avoid this. It does all start spiralling into unbelievable territory, but it's making a point. I thought the body hopping made no sense for so long, because what's the point if you don't remember who you are? And if no one wants a criminal body, but that's the only real way to get more bodies, how are there enough bodies for everyone? But later it does mention the cultural significance of reincarnation, and I guess if you look at it as reincarnation of the soul, it makes a bit more sense that people would buy into it.
