Everything Here Is Beautiful by Mira T. Lee
5.0
Hands down the best book I've ever read that accurately depicts what it is like to love someone with a mental illness. Mira T. Lee nailed the rollercoaster of emotions and the full scale of what life is like for family members of someone with schizophrenia. Both of my parents are mentally ill so this is something I've dealt with my entire life. And unfortunately, has been my reality for much of the last year. In Everything is Beautiful, we meet sisters Miranda and Lucia. When their mother dies and Lucia starts to hear voices, Miranda must step up and fight for her sister. Told from multiple perspectives, this is a heart breaking tale about relationships and what we will do to save the ones we love. Miranda is there with her sister, celebrating the good days, but always watchful for changes in behavior. Miranda is also there for her sister during the hard days- begging her to take her medication, begging the hospital to keep her sister because she knows she's not stable, not sleeping from worrying all of the time. There is no bigger frustration in life than hearing the hospital say they are letting your loved one go when you know they are not stable. Yet, you beg and plead but there's nothing you can do. It's a horrible feeling, and the author accurately depicted these events. As a loved one, your hands are tied. This is a moving, beautiful book about the ties that bind and how far we're willing to go to save the ones we love.
