Counting Down with You by Tashie Bhuiyan

Did not finish book. Stopped at 48%.
I was so excited for this book, but ended up being so disappointed that it was my first DNF of the year. I can handle overly cheesy books, hello, it’s a rom com. But the dialogue between the characters, the texting and the modern references (tik tok, goodreads, etc.) was just too much. The fact that Ace goes from being a mysterious bad boy to literally a playful flirt in the span of five seconds was just so badly written? Like she’s shuddering at the thought of tutoring him and has a nervous breakdown everytime she slightly insults him and the next day he’s stroking her hand and twirling her hair. Also the Muslim representation was sketchy and just reinforced seriously misinformed stereotypes. Her parents are extremely strict, close-minded and oppressing her in a gilded cage. They also lied to her about having a dog allergy? There were a few times where she sort of acknowledged how her cultural upbringing was different than religion but it left a bad taste in my mouth overall. I think this story had a lot of potential. If all the characters weren’t insufferable and the writing was improved (show, don’t tell!!!) I might have been able to get through it.
