A Bound Heart by Laura Frantz

5.0

I have a weakness for historical fiction, particularly for ones that take place in England. A Bound Heart by Laura Frantz is nothing short of spectacular. We are introduced to Lark who lives on the island of Kerrera and a healer of sorts. She works in the stillroom and is the keeper of bees. She grew up with the laird named, Magnus. His wife is not able to conceive a child and Lark tries to help. However, Magnus' wife dies and Lark and Magnus are left to blame and are sent to America in indentured servitude. On the voyage over she becomes the guardian of a baby named Larkin. Even though she has lost her home, Larkin fills a void. The voyage is tough and long but her heart starts yearning for a man she has known her whole life...Magnus. Will they be able to survive in America? Is there any hope for happiness?
This is a wonderful epic. It has everything, wonderful characters, drama, romance, and adventure. Lark is a marvelous main character, wise beyond her years. Magnus is the typical, seemingly perfect Scotsman. They make quite the pair. What I love is that this story does not solely focus on the development of their love. The characters develop individually and mastering their own courage. There always seems to be danger and it keeps the readers on their toes.
Once you pick up this book, there is no putting it down. The pacing is just right. Even though this story takes place in another time, it is impossible not to relate to the characters and feel for them. Lark's connection with Larkin is by far the most heartwarming aspect of this book. Overall, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. This is an absolutely wonderful book for those interested in history, romance and a touch of inspiration.
