The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon
5.0
This book was not only beautifully crafted, it really found a way to seat itself deep in my feelings. This was smart and tender and important and kind of over the top but also so grounded in its story of immigrants and parents and children and dreams and growing up and moving on. It wasn't necessarily the story of Daniel and Natasha falling in love at first (or second) sight that pulled me in, but the story of Daniel and Natasha being able to break free of other restraints in order to find each other.
It's hard to say what I loved the most, but I'm leaning toward the changes in perspective. They were smart, they expanded the story beyond our two main characters, they added to the feeling of everything coming together but maybe it's all coincidence. There were characters who we only understood in a snippet or two, and yet I felt for their stories as much as the main one.
There are reviews that will warn you of insta-love, but I wonder if that's missing the point. I mean, yes, this whole story is about "insta-love" in a way, but that's the point. This whole book is about two people and spend a day together. If that is going to upset you from the beginning, that's the only way I'd say to pass on this one. Otherwise, I want to send this book to everyone I know.
