In all fairness, I came into this with bias after everything I had heard about the author's past, so maybe prejudice is holding out here, but I don't think it's unwarranted. Even looking past all of this (which, if you're curious, just look up the "delia owens controversy"), I didn't really like this book.
I found its pacing to be a bit uneven, and its plot points felt like I could quite literally see them on a storyboard. It felt linear. I'm honestly confused about the raving reviews. The moments I loved in this book mostly highlighted Kya's isolation and her musings, and I appreciated the references to nature, but they, too, felt too on the nose at times. Everything else felt either paper thin or I was genuinely put off by it. I might circle back here after discussing with Landing Book Club, but overall, this is probably my second-most disappointing read this year.
