Bitter Heat by Leta Blake
5.0
Another 5 stars of the year! This was a pleasant surprise.
I had read other omegaverse books by this author before, wasn't much into them but still appreciated the ideas and the writting style. This one had all the elements I wanted, and the funniest thing is that I started it with no expectations, good or bad. Now it is one of my favorites of all time. I love finding new books to love.
The plot here is about Kerry, a pregnant omega who's in contract with a violent alpha in prison (CWs around that situation are on the tags). Janus is an alpha, a city guy who got into a residence in the mountains where Kerry lives in order to start over. Turns out he wasn't the best person out there, but he is motivated to have a different life. Janus grows closer to him despite Kerry pushing him away, but the conflict here is that Kerry cannot be his omega because of the aloha he is contracted to and his parents-in-law that want to take him away, only caring about their son's baby.
The chemistry between them really drew me in. I liked how slow paced was the beginning and it never felt as if it was dragging out. I found it incredible how the author managed to put so much development in such a short amount of pages, and by that I mean that the only good slow burns I've read have a larger length.
I also fell in love with the cast. I liked how even if Kerry and Janus were the obvious center of the story, it also gave them room to expand their own self, and the world didn't revolve around them but it showed that there were other people to take into consideration. Not many authors can pull that off, not many can make the reader care about a cast but it worked for me.
At last, I want to mention that I thought the way the situation was handled well. It is common to encounter the "expected" storyline, which is of the carrier loving their baby no matter what, without considering trauma and other aspects such as the choice over their own body. It felt organic that . That felt very refreshing.
Might edit this review later if I remember anything else I want to say, but this was a perfect book for my tastes. Very well deserved 5/5.
