This story is just so well-written. The two narrative accounts, from "Verity" and Maddie, are both deeply emotional with fantastic characterisation through their first person perspectives, but also come together to create the most thrilling revelations and plot twists. It goes without saying that they are each unreliable narrators - especially as Verity is writing an account detailed enough to make her a traitor as she tells her Nazi captors every detail of her mission - but when Maddie takes over and starts to elaborate from the other side of the prison, everything is brought into sharp, wonderful focus, and the reader is shown just how brilliant these two women are together.
To me, this book is a celebration of the human spirit, and of the individual braveries that were hidden throughout the bigger picture of WWII. It is a love letter to female friendship, and to the sacrifices that everyone had to make when lives were at stake.
Beautifully written, carefully calculated and subtly charged, and heartbreakingly characterised. This book cannot be worth any less than 5/5.
