Better to Have Gone: Love, Death, and the Quest for Utopia in Auroville by Akash Kapur
5.0
Akash Kapur (in partnership with his wife, Auralice), have woven together a powerful, personal narrative of the utopian community Auroville, where both grew up and where Auralice's parents, John and Diane, died when she was young. The book rests on a lot of personal correspondence and interview testimony, and it's qualitatively very rich. Some readers might want a bit more of an incisive and objective look at the community and its history but Kapur isn't out to label or dismiss anyone and gives a lot of leeway to different perspectives. Through it all you can feel many emotions, including the pain and hope of the Auroville residents and John and Diane's families.
