The Low, Low Woods by Carmen Maria Machado

4.0

Delightfully queer and grounded in reality, The Low, Low Woods starts off immediately with a mystery that is so prescient we almost lost sight of it as everything else piles on top. Both El and Octavia are such dimensional characters: you can't forget that El's poor and Latinx, and Octavia's queerness is also center stage. Plus... Environmental horror and the decline of small-town America was very real here.
