Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

dark emotional funny hopeful sad medium-paced

5.0

Crying in H Mart was definitely a 5 ~ read. Michelle Zauner describes growing up as a Korean-American
kid while also telling the story of her mom's fight with cancer. They had an often tumultuous relationship,
but found a common ground in food. The story is heartbreaking at times, yet the internal struggles of
wanting to belong and finding an identity of your own were relatable to all.

Losing people is never easy and everyone handles the aftermath differently. There were some
descriptions that were hard to read, and I would definitely look up TW for death before reading. I found it interesting how the author was able to process her mother's death, her upbringing, and her future all through one book. Also, if you did not know that Michelle Zauner is the lead singer for Japanese
Breakfast like I didn't, you can now get 10x more excited over this book. I love her music and it made
the experience reading this even more special.

The only other thing I really want to mention is the food. Food is everywhere and everything in this
book. Make sure you have a way to order or cook Korean dishes with a lot of kimchi or you will obsess
until you can. I had to get some bibimbap and dumplings to sate my cravings. I also have a newfound respect for the kimchi making process and want to start incorporating more Korean dishes into my meals at home.
