Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross

5.0

What a way to start the year!

I have really struggled with how to review this because all I can really do is gush about how much I loved it. At its heart, this is probably wartime romance with fantastical elements and it worked so well for me. It’s maybe a bit light on the world building for more traditional fantasy readers, but it had just the right amount for me for a book like this. To me, this is a book about Iris and Roman, not a book about the war between the gods. I really enjoyed the forging of the connection between them and felt that the way it was done (no spoilers for how their letters were reaching each other) was so clever. I think the relationship that they built and the way it developed was so sweet. Time-wise this doesn’t actually cover that long a period, but it never felt rushed – I could see the way it was developing and I loved getting both of their perspectives on what was happening. In fact, I enjoyed all the relationships that were formed and felt like the side characters were incredibly well developed as well. I genuinely haven’t found something I could personally criticise about this book. I had to go straight out and buy the sequel!
