We Unleash the Merciless Storm by Tehlor Kay Mejia
2.0
I received an ARC before it came out, I just finally got around to reading it.
Let me be honest - this is one of the worst sequels I've ever read. I was not impressed by this ending to the duology.
When I heard that it was being told from Carmen's POV, I thought it would be interesting to get her side of the story for the next part. Turns out I was wrong. I know she's 17, but I didn't think there would be so much internal conflict inside of her regarding Dani. I really thought that most of the book was focused on how she missed Dani so much, and how much Carmen wanted her back, but then Carmen also wanted to be loyal to La Voz and put them first. I think this took away from the story. This missed its mark for me - there was a lot of this versus actual progression in the story.
And when Dani and Carmen kissed, making up, I felt that it was much too quick. And also, how do they know for sure that Sota died. He could've simply been taken captive, but the author just assumes he's dead.
The ending was okay. I mean, it cleared up the main problem, which was La Voz being taken down, but I never reconnected with the characters like I had in "We Set the Dark on Fire". It also never officially tells us if their plan for helping La Voz merge with the Inner Island or not. If they even complete the deal between Alex and Mateo.
Overall, not really happy with this book. I'm honestly so glad I'm done with it - I won't ever read it again.
