Better Living Through Birding: Notes from a Black Man in the Natural World by Christian Cooper
4.0
I forget how I ran into this, maybe a best of 2023 book list, maybe just casually wondering, "Whatever happened to that birder from the Central Park video?" Either way, I'm glad I randomly put a library hold on this, because I ended up enjoying the hell out of it.
"The birder from the Central Park video" turns out to be gay SF/F nerd and comic writer, who is both really into birds and wants to tell you about all of them, and also knows how to tell a funny and insightful story. I'm only a filthy casual when it comes to birding, but still loved his adventures around the world, discussions of sexuality, activism, spirituality, family drama, and gossip from Marvel in the early 1990s. Apparently he was the reason the last two swimsuit issues were Like That, and was also involved in Northstar coming out.
Really enjoyable memoir, whether your into birds or not.
