Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi
5.0
There are hyped books.
You know them. They make you doubt sometimes and howl at the world screaming WHY?!!
They make you weary of such books and you always ponder if you should give them a try or not.
And there are hyped books that make it all better.
Because they just deserve it so much!!
The only annoyance I really have are with the boys of that story...arfff not the worst but also, not the best. Looking at you Tzain you hypocrite and you Inan for changing your tune every two second.
But you know what? No matter how annoying it can be (and it was not that annoying to me) I guess I have to admit there were reasons why they might not be the most stable characters around...
Which leads me to the world building. It was stunning , well done and effective. You get to know the world through many perspectives and life shattering experience. It did feel real. And raw.
And despite all the violence, pain, hate, anger and horrors -much to real echoes of our own world, the character fought and I was just glad to be there reading and see them rise.
Zélie and Amari shone above all.
I’m really excited to have picked Children of Blood and Bone and I can’t wait for the sequel!
I would not say the book is perfect, and I know I could point and find a few things others might find a bit less engaging. As the shortness of the action taking place on a span of only a few days or some somewhat insta loves and predictable pairings or actions.
And yet, I think as a whole, it is a solid first installment of a new series with so much potential and already many qualities.
The writing is not over the top but some passages are beautiful and other powerful.
I read Children of Blood and Bone is one sitting, with that excitement and expectation when you turn the page not every book gives you.
I read a lot, and there are many books that I enjoy and yet rare are those who make me giggly of anticipation when I turn the pages and it’s always great to find one of those!
So 5 stars it is for a book full of heart, adventures, sorrows, joy, frienship, reality and maji ! Can’t wait for the next installment! And see what mess Zélie and co are left to deal with (yes, cliffhanger!)
