At times, I found myself theorising about the direction the plot would take, based on this being a middle grade book. I'm so pleased that I was thwarted at every point. This book is so refreshingly clever. The Lilac's decision about her future [at the end of the novel] is something that adult books fail at. 
I had no choice – I was legally obligated to give this 5 stars.
