The Last Days of the Dinosaurs: An Asteroid, Extinction, and the Beginning of Our World by Riley Black

I read this as a buddy read with my mom and I am so glad that I did. I loved this book, way more than I expected to. It painted the picture of this extinction event, as well as future moments in time, vividly. The author did what she set out to do in showing not only the immediate influence of the impact, but also how the world was shaped in the near and far flung future after the impact. I saw the details behind why this extinction event was catastrophic for so many populations, why some creatures survived, and how the ratios of different types of living things on the earth changed. I gained an appreciation for the narrow margin of opportunities created by this event, included the success of humanity. I felt sorrow for the suffering of those dinosaurs in the hours after the impact. I learned about adaptation and evolution in action. I loved that this author included information about how she made decisions on how to present each time period with the minimal data available, and I feel like her speculations make a ton of sense for what we know right now. This was a really approachable nonfiction that I think is a great place to start before taking a deep dive into dinosaurs, and would be a good read for people who aren't sure if they like nonfiction since this book reads like a movie.
