For ten years I thought I was preparing to destroy you, when really I was preparing to love you.
Another Ann Liang masterpiece that simply doesn’t miss!
The enemies to lovers trope is something that I absolutely love. Coupled with academic rivals, we have a sure hit. I absolutely love the way Ann Liang writes her characters and while Sadie isn’t my favourite, I think Julius is quietly climbing up the ranks for me. There’s something quite charming about this book that I cannot place, something about two teenagers learning to fall in love for the first time - something so pure and touching. The way that they didn’t understand how their rivalry manifested itself into concern, care and loving; learning to understand each other beyond academia.
While the romance is quiet and romantic, clean and pure, I’d have to say the main premise of the plot which revolved around the emails fell a little behind. It’s sort of forgotten in pages, and the repercussions are little to none. Feels like Sadie got away with it with a nice slap of the wrist and a lover too at the end. I think we could also have explored Sadie’s character a bit more, her desire to always be the best, her people pleaser tendencies and why she became this way.
Nevertheless, it is a wonderful, wholesome and sweet love story and I definitely will remember Julius Gong and Sadie Wren for times to come.
