We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

5.0

This is probably the best example of an unreliable narrator. After DNFing See What I Have Done by Sarah Schmidt, it was a treat to return to this short novel. Schmidt's take on Lizzie Borden's character seemed to have been influenced by Jackson's Merricat (whether that's true or not, I have no idea, but it certainly seemed to be). In this case though, the reader has less of a feeling of overall confusion, but instead a sort of fascination with the stunted mentality of a possibly abused (or at least neglected) 18 year old who sounds like a child of about 7.

Constance's character is absolutely wonderfully written. That poor, broken, agoraphobic girl!
