The Umbrella Academy, Vol. 1: Apocalypse Suite by Gerard Way

1.0

This reads like giving a 16 year old his first comics deal and for some reason also giving him access to a state of the art production team. The pacing and storylines are all over the place, with barely any explanation of what's going on - bar some textblocks towards the end. I wish I could say I at least liked the characters or the art, but I feel like I wasn't given enough opportunities to grow affectionate towards either of them. The coloring was quite nice, with the splash pages proving to be quite impressive (I *loved* the font usage for the chapter splashes), but it felt flat and a bit heartless nonetheless. While this did not motivate me to read the second volume, it does make me excited for the TV show; despite my low rating, I do think the concept itself is intriguing, so I think a different execution could do it well. Also Elliot Page. I miss him.
