What Doesn't Kill Us: Ends Duet, Book 2 by MercyAnn Summers, MercyAnn Summers
4.0
Where book one in this duet felt like a teaser at times, full of riddles and unanswered questions, book two made sure to settle all curiousities, cause emotional whiplash, and give us an amazing insight into the true reality of Toni and Dare's relationship in all its dramatic, dangerous, and depraved, spicy glory.
With the first book ending on a cliffhanger, I had made presumptions about what was going to happen in this book, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The author did a brilliant job of bringing in twists and turns that I didn't expect, keeping me as a reader on my toes at all times. It was wonderful to witness both the character growth and relationships forming within the book, not just between the two main characters but with sideline characters too. It became clear that not all is as it seems, and that notion applied to not only the situations the characters found themselves in but also the characters themselves, with perceived enemies turning out to be some of their strongest allies and vice versa.
As well as the dual POV of Dare and Toni, we also got flashbacks to the time before Toni lost her memory, combined with her new resurfacing memories, and it gave us the full picture of their relationship and really highlighted just how much they loved each other, even if they did snark and snipe constantly. They both showed raw vulnerability towards each other and immense amounts of desire and love. I didn't fully understand the love-hate aspect of their relationship before, but this book really showed that it wasn't love-hate; it was just love.
