Having lost her family to a manticore attack Ester pledges herself to a life tracing Rocs for the Royal Mews. These Rocs are the only known predators of the manticores. Zahra is paired with Ester, and knowing fully well that Zahra can never reciprocate the love and loyalty that Ester gives to her. Ester puts her heart and soul into becoming the best ruhker in the kingdom.
This love letter that Lee wrote about the unreciprocated bond between Roc and Ruhker was absolutely beautiful. For such a short story the world was built so well and stood on such a strong foundation that Fonda could continue any multitude of stories off the world!
I was absolutely crying and hugging the book by the end of this.
