Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews

5.0

Magic Bites is about Kate Daniels. A mercenary on her own, doing the odd job that no one else will take. She finds out however that her guardian has been murdered recently. Her guardian was a powerful man and the knight diviner. Not someone taken down easily. As he was her only surviving family member, she's decided to volunteer her services to The Order and find his killer. There is suspicion placed on both the shapeshifters and vampires of their world and each suspects the other. The Beast Lord in particular has taken notice of her and she becomes involved in certain politics way over her head.

I am still swimming thorough my homework but this book was so good I flew through it mostly in one day. The world is really interesting in that it seems to be set in the future but due to some sort of catastrophic event, hasn't developed technologically speaking past today's time. Magic is infused in the world but it comes in fluctuation. Sometimes magic flares up and most of their modern technology doesn't work. However you can now summon monsters, create wards to protect yourself, and any other number of magical things. But then after a while the magic goes away and you can't cast any spells but you can finally catch up on your favorite tv shows. There's quite a lot of things unexplained or not explained in depth but you never feel like you can't follow the story. The characters within the book are also really wonderful. Kate has just the right amount of sarcasm and wit without feeling annoying and Curran (the beast lord) was over the top but didn't feel as domineering and bull headed as other male shifters are sometimes portrayed. This is definitely urban fantasy so don't expect any kind of romance. There's a hint of something between Kate and Curran but besides from a quick kiss before the big battle that's all the romance there is. Vampire fans be warned though that don't expect a lot of vampire love here. The vampires in this world are puppets control by magic users and they aren't pretty and are rather disgusting. In general this is a great book for urban fantasy fans and something I'd highly recommend.
