The premise of the book sounded so compelling, I preordered the book months before it got released… only to be terribly disappointed. I think the book could’ve been great, but the author took certain decisions in how and why the protagonist ended up where she is and especially the end,
the entire “just be happy with what you have”-schtick,
reaaaaally annoyed and made me angry. Including/dealing with mental health was a pretty obvious thing to be playing a part in here, but in my personal opinion, the author didn’t deal with the subject well enough. It’s a tricky subject and the “solution”/resolution to it all at the end of the book was just an utter disappointment. It was the typical solution society likes to preach 24/7, showing just how much they DON’T understand what certain mental health problems actually are and how they look and feel like.
And especially that someone who’s suicidal and/or depressed isn’t suddenly going to be “healthy” and “cured” and “normal” again, just because they had a near death experience.
I obviously know this book is fiction, but in my eyes, this book is sending just too many wrong messages to its readers.
