Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood
5.0
I really enjoyed this! I found some of the incongruous "anachronisms" (looking at you CD-ROMs and DVDs!) a little grating until I realised how old this book is, 2003 was actually quite a long time ago technologically speaking. There are a few pretty repulsive parts regarding child abuse that I wasn't expecting, I kind of hoped I might be able to avoid that particular topic (why is it so prevalent in good quality literary fiction??? WHY???) but no such luck. Aside from that, the world Atwood has created is quite mad. The gene splicing is ridiculous, very creative and just sinister enough to be thought provoking about where exactly we should draw the moral/ethical line when it comes to technology. Just because we can, doesn't mean we should.
