The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by Thomas S. Kuhn
informative
4.25
The sciences still have not yet divorced themselves entirely from mythology, which motivates a lot more scientific theories than most scientists are willing to admit. Thomas Kuhn outlines the history of science not as a cumulative enterprise, but a series of revolutions that occur as old, outdated paradigms are replaced with new, incompatible ones once old ways of thinking lead to dead ends that no longer make sense. This means that every paradigm of science widely thought to be absolute fact today will eventually be replaced with something better and more accurate. Perceiving any science as cumulative is a huge mistake that most people make, especially scientists who are boxed into one very specific field with a very specific paradigm, leading most scientists to be extremely close-minded and unreceptive to new information and dismissive of anomalies, so everyone who is interested in science should read this. Dogmatism in science is especially destructive to all forms of progress because of the strong relationship it has to our culture, which takes even longer than scientists to let go of the old paradigms.
