Polio: An American Story by David M. Oshinsky
5.0
A fascinating, detailed look at the scientific and socio-political aspects of the fight against polio in the U.S. from the 1930s-1960s. Oshinsky gives us all the necessary background on the key players - scientists, politicians, philanthropists and more - as well as giving a clear sense of shifting public attitudes over the years. The crusade against polio really revolutionized medical research as well as fundraising and philanthropy for health-related causes, and it's worth a read to better understand not just our history, but also our present day.
