Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson
5.0
Wow.
This book was all kinds of crazy and I LOVED IT. Interweaving a twinge of Southern Gothic with contemporary politics, a just ludicrous enough plot line and a whole heaping of 'Southern charm', 'Nothing To See Here' sparkles from the very first page. I picked this up on the recommendation of a bunch of Bookstagrammers who had been raving about this quirky little novel, not knowing whether it would really be for me. But damn, this was kind of everything I wanted in a book.
Right now, it's hard for me to put into words just why I loved this book. It's incredibly well crafted, with a tight-knit cast of characters who, whilst they feel a little pastiche-y, never come across as cliched or overwritten. Its humour is dark as mud, but it would have to be for a plot like this. I was hooked from the first few chapters - and I can see why so many people love it.
Also - this would be an excellent movie. The narrative is so contained that it could fall across ninety minutes and the visual joy of fire - particularly watching how two kids spontaneously combust - would be amazing. Honestly, Taika Waititi needs to get on this because it would be amazing.
