The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh

3.0

This was an interesting retelling of a Korean myth, I had only heard the myth once when I was much younger but I felt very much reminded of it while reading this story. We follow Mina, a young girl who lives in a village by the sea that every year will sacrifice a young girl to be the bride of the sea god to try and stop storms from raging. Mina knowing that the sacrifice for this year is the woman her brother is in love with decides to take fate into her own hands for the first of many times in the story by jumping in and sacrificing herself to the spirit realm. We follow her as she learns about the sea gods' curse and makes some interesting friends along the way. One of the scenes that struck me was when she meets a rag-tag trio of spirits who end up popping in and out of the story when she needs them. When she goes to the Spirit House to see if she can speak to her ancestors she realizes that the trio that were helping her were her ancestors.
