This was a fun little read.
Nothing too complex. Its very similar to Harry Dresden books. In this case, a magical, former cop, is looking for a War criminal who has dropped off the face of the earth, literally, as a favor to an old, dying, friend.
The main character is interesting. Very much a "flawed hero" type. He's from the hills of West Virginia, but also a very powerful mage, who has no problem throwing innocent people into danger in an effort to see his task done.
Only 2 books in the series, so I'll read the next one to finish it off.
