'the crucible' is a party fictionalised play critiquing puritan theocracy during the salem witch trials

i know this play was written as a response to mccarthyism (a period of political prosecution of left-wing supporters in the usa in the 1900s), and the commentary on mass hysteria, mob mentalities, alongside the overall pessimistic tone worked well for that. however, i found there was a LOT to be desired in terms of female characters

still, interesting ideas on religious corruption, the hypocrisy of the church/organised religions, and the american political landscape of the time
