The Ashes and the Star-Cursed King by Carissa Broadbent
4.0
the way i was going to give this a 3.5 but the last 20% saved it. THE LAST 20. that’s crazy.
anyways here’s why i couldn’t enter into it as much as the first one (they are rated the same but i preferred the first more to the sequel). i literally could not get over the fact that he KILLED HER FATHER in the last book like IM SORRY???!!! i know he’s a horrible man but STILL. i mean i wouldn’t be able to look past that but idk
i wasn’t sure HOW i’d actually look past it even though it was a book character but somehow i did. it literally took over half the book though. i guess the more oraya learnt about vincent, the easier it was to forgive raihn.
it was also very slowwww compared to book 1. what i loved about the first is that it flowed so easily. and it was just so natural. one of my favourite things about this author’s writing is the dialogue. it flows most of the time like a real conversation. i HATE when authors write lines that would literally never be said irl and this series didn’t have that (at least not much of it - enough for me to not notice or pay attention to).
i love love love the characters a lot. mische is so cute i hope she gets her own book. and also i’m a sucker for romance (wow shocker) & raihn and oraya’s was really touching to read :’) i just felt everything that they felt. except for raihn for like 60% of the book when all i could think about was him killing vincent LOL. i like his character though, he’s a little different than all the other mmcs in fantasy novels.
anyways, i’m actually looking forward to reading more from this world but alas, i think i need a fantasy break
