The Briar Club by Kate Quinn
Did not finish book.
Honestly I was so bummed to DNF this but I'd had it for 3 weeks which is a really long time for an audiobook for me. A lot of people were waiting in line for it, and I found myself avoiding it in favor of music and podcasts because it just didn't hold my interest, and I think the main reason for that is this book suffers from SEVERE pacing issues.
It's set up in past and present style, with each of the "past" chapters focusing on the backstory of oen of the house residents. In the present, we hear the "house" point of view, and slowly learn more and more information about a murder that has occured in the house. It is alluded to that one of the residents did it, and they're all covering for this person, but we don't have any details.
I was LIVING for the present chapters! The house as a living, feeling, thinking character capable of sarcasm and pettiness? LOVE LOVE LOVE. I was also super interested in the murder and absolutely dying to know who was killed and who did it, but I never learned this when I put it down around the 60% mark.
The problem with this book is each resident's chapter is LONG. Some are interesting and some are not. And with each chapter being basically a novella, it really takes you away from the present day situation. It's really, really hard to sell multiple small stories couched inside one larger one and ultimately I didn't think the author was successful at doing it. Personally I think it might have worked better it the story cut back and forth between different residents and the present day, so every story is building to the climax together... but that's just me. As it currently is, even the amazing present day chapters weren't enough to get me through.
(also I still really want to know how it ends and couldn't find spoilers online so if someone wants to fill me in...)
